HAPPY 20TH NIRVANA'S IN UTERO

So today we are celebrating the 20 years anniversary of
Nirvana's third and final studio Album In Utero.
We thought we would share some audio and visual gems
of the iconic 3 piece from Seattle Washington.

So here's to Dave, Krist and Kurt.

One of my personal favourite Nirvana B-Sides featured on the extended reissue of In Utero and one of the first signs of Dave Ghrol's talent as a guitarist/songwriter.

And if you have a spare 45min let Mr Dave Grohl's velvet tones caress
your eardrums with his wise and inspiring words about music and being a musician.

BIG DEAL X WE ARE COW

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with Alice and Kacey from the group
BIG DEAL at this years Beacons Festival.
You may have previously seen our posts and tweets about their album 'June Gloom
we adore these dreamy rock vibes and beautiful male-female harmonies.

I snapped at the chance of grabbing a few shots and fired a few questions at the duo.
Here is what they had to say.
Enjoy.

All photos by our photographer Richard Manning.

HOW WAS THE REST OF YOUR BEACONS FESTIVAL? DID YOU MANAGE TO CATCH MANY BANDS WHILST YOU WHERE THERE.
KC: Unfortunately we had to drive back that afternoon so we didn't get to see a whole lot, but we managed to see Thumpers and get in a wrestling match with Drenge.
BIG DEAL - DREAM MACHINES
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE FESTIVAL /GIG MOMENT?

ALICE: We played a festival in Cornwall and we all slept in the back of our van together. It was an awesome drunken slumber party. We were worried it was going to be horrible but it was really fun.

WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO TOUR WITH?
KC: Arcade Fire. It would be scary to know they are coming on after you, but amazing to see them every night.
ALICE : MGMT. They are amazing, and we'd probably have a lot of fun with them. I'm also in love with Andrew VanWynGarden so that'd be an extra perk.

 HOW DID YOU MEET PAWS

ALICE: I can't exactly remember, but it was something to do with swapping one of our bands t-shirts for one of theirs. They stayed in my house for a while when they were in London and we ate eggs and soldiers every morning but because they're scottish they would smash up the shells with their spoons after so the 'little witches can't use them as boats to come and get you.' Very strange scottish superstitions  Anyway we've been friends ever since. They've also made one of our favourite records of the last two years.

BEST PIECE OF CLOTHING YOU BOTH OWN?

KC: My zelda shirt. It's been washed so many times no one can tell what it is. But i know.

ALICE: A pair of grey jeans that i love so much but are nearly too broken to wear, the waist band is held together with a piece of ribbon that my mum sewed in.

BEST BUY FROM A VINTAGE STORE?

ALICE: When we were in Joshua Tree we went to all the thrift stores, where if you search you can find the most amazing vintage clothes all for under $5. I bought three pairs of levi's jeans for $8. Kc found an amazing shirt with the sun and moon on that he wore for the ' in your car' video because we were trying to go for a fear and loathing in Las Vegas kind of look and we thought it looked like something Johnny Depps character would wear.

BIG DEAL - IN YOUR CAR

TOP 3 DESERT ISLAND DISCS?

KC: Beatles - White Album / Nirvana - Nevermind / Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

YOUR BEST RECORDS OF 2013 SO FAR?
KC + ALICE: Mac de Marco 2 / Yeah Yeah Yeah's Mosquito / Drenge, Drenge,

BEST CITY YOU HAVE BEEN TO?
ALICE: We played in this city an hour outside of Venice called Sesto al Reghena and the gig was in a huge castle courtyard called Piazza Castello. There were old nuns all dressed in white habits cycling around as we sound checked and as it got dark tables and chairs were set up for everyone with candles everywhere. It was insane.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GO FULL BAND?
KC: It's just more fun. Even solo artists perform with a band, otherwise its just too hard to engage an audience with such quiet music.

HOW DID YOU MEET MEL AND HUW?
ALICE: The last band they were in were on the same label as us, Mute Records. Mute did a small european showcase thing where they put three of their bands on a tour bus together and organised shows for them in each city they woke up in and when there's 16 of you sharing a living space you get pretty close pretty quickly.

PLAY LOUD: Fake Club Girlz

After hearing a few of the Fake Club band tracks we are all sure this is probably what we will be listening to for the rest of the Summer.

Not only is it a group of girls thrashing guitars and pounding drums but they have managed to stay a little bit rough while becoming more popular and that can be quite hard to achieve. We are really into the fact that they have a bit of a New Rave vibe even though they are often referred to as punk and even though that neon/ geometric print ship sailed not that long ago, we want more..

Do What You Gotta Do.

Over and Over.

Beauty Queen.

Yep, Nothing Fake about these lot. Looking forward to go see them play somewhere soon!

Dot to Dot Festival X PINS

Alongside our Competition to win tickets for you and a friend to attend the Dot to Dot Festival this month we are talking to some of our favourite bands that we look forward to watching there! Today we got hold of the babes from PINS and chat about what they're working on, who they are excited about seeing at Dot To Dot Festival, the best and worst thing they have ever bought at a festival and more!

HIYA LADIES! X
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOING FOR NOW?

Faith - "The current formation of PINS has been since January this year. We got a new drummer, Sophie. Before that I can't remember."

WHAT ARE THE PINS GIRLS WORKING ON AT THE MINUTE?

Faith - "Singing, dancing, pretending to be film stars and we've just finished recording an LP, it'll be out later in the year."

WHAT'S THE BEST GIG YOU'VE EVER PLAYED?

Faith - "We played a Christmas show at the Bunker in Manchester last December, that was special. I have a good time wherever we play but the ones we curate ourselves stand out more to me. Saying that, we opened for British Sea Power a couple of weeks ago, it was Sophie's second show with us and we played a bunch of new songs to hundreds of strangers, it was really fun!"

Lois - " Yeah I think the Christmas one for me too. All the Bunker shows have been amazing, it was cool to be able to put our own."

HOW DO FEEL ABOUT PLAYING DOT TO DOT? HAVE YOU PLAYED BEFORE?

Faith - "This is our first time, we're playing all three cities so I'm looking forward to it."

Anna - " I've been a couple of times. If I think back to the first time I went and I was dreaming of being in a band... I guess things have gone pretty well since then to be playing all three festivals days this year!"

WHAT OTHER BANDS ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCH AT D2D?

Faith - "Swim Deep come up in our conversations a lot for one reason or another so I'd like to see them in real life. Other than that, I don't know. I like Best Friends so I'll try and catch them."

Lois - "Yeah excited, hoping to see Deap Vally and Wolf Alice."

Anna - "Hoping to catch Deap Vally, Lucy Rose and The 1975. I went to school with those boys and haven't seen them since the Drive like I do/ Big Sleep Days."

WHAT'S PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE AND WHERE WILL PINS BE AFTER THE FESTIVAL?

Faith - "We have a couple more shows in the UK and EU left after Dot to Dot then a few festivals in the Summer, come and see us!"

Lois - "End of the Road at the end of August should be cool."

WHAT IS YOUR FESTIVAL FASHION MUST HAVE?

Faith - "Sunglasses"

Lois - "Hotpants"

Anna - "A kigu"

WHAT IS THE BEST AND WORST THING YOU EVER BOUGHT AT A FESTIVAL?

Faith - "Best and worst thing would be mushroom chocolate"

Lois - "Vintage shirt for £5 best and worst is Fosters"

Anna - "The best and worst thing I considered buying at a festival was a 'Nobody knows I'm a Lesbian t-shirt."

WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU'VE FOUND IN A VINTAGE STORE?

Faith - "I got some really cute shoes from COW last year, I wore them until they fell off my feet. Apart from that I tend to collect boys t-shirts."

Lois - "Loads of things.. Gonna go with my fringed shirt though."

Anna - "My huge black fur coat from Ryan Vintage in Manchester. I lived in it, it kept me toasty on two visits to Iceland in Winter. Also I like that people nuzzle into me like a cat. Cute."

Dot To Dot Festival X Best Friends

As you know we are running a competition to be in for a chance to win a pair of tickets to DOT TO DOT FESTIVAL! See how you can win yours here...

In line with this mega competition we are going to be talking to some of the bands who are playing over the 3 days of fun spread across Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester. We want to find out who they are excited about watching at Dot To Dot, where we can see them after the Festival and obvs what they will be wearing!

So to kick off all the excitement we spoke to the lads from the BEST FRIENDS. You may or may not of heard of this band but they are working to hard to make sure their catchy surf/ pop/ rock/ garage style tunes never leave your head. And with track titles like 'If You Think Too Much Your Brain Will Fall Out', 'Surf Bitches' and 'Throwing Up' you can see straight away they aren't taking it too seriously but enjoying every minute and with this attitude they are becoming quite appealing to all music lovers.

HIYA JACK, LEWIS, EDAND TOM aka BEST FRIENDS!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN GOING NOW?

Jack - "About two years . I think our first gig was around this time last year."

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MINUTE?

Jack - "We're recording a new E.P hopefully to release before we start playing the festivals this summer."

WHAT'S THE BEST GIG YOU'VE EVER DONE?

Jack - "Loads but probably in the house we lived in last year. We used to put on house shows. They were always the most messy but the most fun and the living room made a perfect venue. We did a WWF themed fancy dress show once which was siiiiiiiick!"

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT PLAYING DOT TO DOT?

Ed - "It should be rad!"

WHAT OTHER BANDS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING THERE?

Ed - "Bo Ningen are one of the most insane bands I've ever seen so I'll try and see them at some point that weekend. I'm also looking forward to watching a load of bands I've never seen/heard before, should be a good weekend!"

Lewis - "I'm gonna catch Wolf Alice, we played their single launch recently and they were really good, they're gonna be big."

WHAT'S PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE & WHERE CAN WE SEE YOU AGAIN AFTER THE FESTIVAL?

Lewis - "I'll be looking for a job, are you hiring?"

WHAT IS YOUR FESTIVAL MUST HAVE?

Ed - "A pair of boots"

Lewis - "Hats. Getting sunstroke can make you look like a pussy. Avoid meshbacks too because the sun can still get in and fry your brain."

WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU'VE EVER FOUND FROM A VINTAGE STORE?

Ed - "Festival boots!"

Lewis - "I bought a vest with Snoop on the other day. That's pretty good."

Thanks to Best Friends for answering some questions for us. We look forward to seeing them at Dot To Dot Festival and to listen to more from them follow this link!
