DRENGE X WE ARE COW

There is no way you haven't heard of Drenge yet.. The brothers from the North are every where at the minute and have earned their new exposure by playing Festival after Festival through the Summer and most recently on the Jools Holland Later.. show.
After spending most of their time listening to music and being inspired by bands like Nirvana and The White Stripes and without a stream of entertainment running through their home town they chose music to focus and on and direct their creativity and Thank god they did otherwise we wouldn't have such catchy, thrashy and raw songs as Face Like A Skull, Backwaters and Bloodsports.

We caught up with Eoin from the band to see how they feel about the sudden wave of popularity, their tour and what's coming next for them.

Drenge - Face Like A Skull

The video Backwaters gives us an idea of the fun these two might have got up to at a younger age. We love the video and you may recognise the girl (Chelsea) from our High Summer Video

Drenge - Backwaters

HOW ARE YOU? WHAT YOU BEEN UP TO?

We're fighting fit o day three of our UK tour. I've just eaten too many jalepenos and now my nose is running.

THE ALBUM IS GREAT AND YOU'RE EVERYWHERE AT THE MINUTE.. HOW DO YOU FIND ALL OF THIS EXPOSURE?

It's fine. I never really encounter it that much, occasionally I see an ad on youtube or something but it's outside of my world.

HOW WAS YOUR SUMMER AND WHAT WAS YOU FAVOURITE FESTIVAL YOU PLAYED?

The summer was really great. We felt blessed by the spate of good weather. Glatonbury was amazing. Reading was mind blowing. We really enjoyed Knee Deep and Best Kept Secret too.

WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHLIGHT AND WHO WAS YOUR FAVE BAND?

Nick Cave blew me away at Glastonbury. He should have headlined that night. I was laughing and crying and shaking all at the same time.

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH FAMILY ALL THE TIME?

It's great. Both Rory and I find it the easiest way to make the music we want to make. We try and work with people as an extension of our family. Our managers are both brothers and we work with a very small close knit group of people at the label. It's important to us to have that undoubted sense of trust with people we work with.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ON JOOLS HOLLAND/ BEING ON TV COMPARED TO GIGS YOU'RE USED TO PLAYING? AND WHAT'S KANYE LIKE?

It's been really great exposure. Everyone in the village where we live has been telling our parents how much they enjoyed it. But for us it's all about the gigs. Everything in TV is very controlled and restrictive, whereas you have a freedom to do what you want to do at shows. Kanye is one of the nicest people I have met all year.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE NIGHT OUT IN SHEFFIELD?

A quiet one. The city is over run with great pubs, so any excuse to hang around in Kelham Island, or in The Tap, Brown Bear or wherever is good enough for me.

ARE YOU PLANNING ON STAYING UP HERE OR IS THE BIG SMOKE CALLING?

I can't stand London. it's like living in a permanent stressful enviroment. I couldn't do it, Sheffield is nice. It's small and humble and I know my way around. London just terrifies me. It's not good for my nervous system.

WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO TOUR WITH?

I'd love to do a show with Pulled Apart By Horses. We started our band after I saw them at Tramlines in 2010. That was a long time ago.

Thanks for that Eoin! Love the last answer, we suggest any intrigued fans copy and paste this into a chinese to english translation page to see what they said!!

GET THE LOOK: Peace!

It's only every now and then that a band will come out with both a great sound with an interesting style. The four piece band Peace is one of those bands that are easy to watch and take a charming photograph as well as giving us some of the best Summer songs this year!

No one wants to see a band that has been heavily styled into the cool one, the cheeky one, the naughty one and the heartthrob (well some might).. but we prefer to see a band that oozes attitude and personality and is not afraid to put it out there with their wardrobe.

As you know we're fond of patterned silk shirts, tees, denim and leather and we are looking to Peace for a Get The Look and not just to get their look as the newest, coolest band around right now but because they are not afraid to wear what they want or however they want to wear it..

Here are a few pieces from WWW.WEARECOW.COM that will ensure you are a step ahead of the rest of the street.

Happy Birthday Bestival!

One of the biggest and most anticipated Festivals of each year is BESTIVAL! The one where you have to travel a bit further and go on a boat to get there but you will have the most amazing time of your life. This one also has a dress code which means you can plan a mega outfit to compete with thousands of people for best dressed, bearing in mind the outfit/costume might not make it till the end of the weekend!

This year 5th - 8th September the Isle of Wight hosts the festival for the 10th time and will be not be holding back to celebrate their 10th Birthday! With an Under The Sea theme for all goers to really go for it.. Think nautical, anchors, mermaids, sailors, shipwrecks, Moby Dick, treasure islands, rum bars, beaches and much more.. This is probably one of our favourite themes for any fancy dress event!!

Here are some of the best looks from the previous years.. The Hungry Caterpillar is amazing!

With the line up this year including Elton John, Snoop Dogg, MIA, Wu-Tang Clan, The Flaming Lips, The Roots, The Walkmen, Simian Mobile Disco, Johnny Marr, Ghostpoet, John Cooper Clark, The 1975, Kitty, Daisy and Lewis, Peace and Savages to name a few, without even going onto the DJ's,  there is certainly something for everyone!!

We have put together a selection of pieces from our website that you could definitely wear, add to or layer up for your Bestival nautical themed look!! Order before it gets too late to deliver!

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY BESTIVAL!!!

In Love with Slow Club

After a busy weekend at Tramlines in Sheffield running round to see loads of bands and performances we fell insanely in love with Slow Club.

The duo have been around for a while now with two successful albums, touring worldwide and featuring celebs in their videos. After they played the main stage on Sunday at Tramlines Festival, introducing new songs with a full band including a brass section and some pretty heart wrenching vocals from the gorgeous Becky, we are pretty sure they just stepped it up in this business.

The duo have a lovely enthusiasm when performing and clearly a great friendship that makes them instantly likeable. We caught up with the busy Becky from Slow Club and asked her a few questions on her Tramlines experience, her stage wear and where she finds the best vintage around the world!

HI BECKY... HOW WAS YOUR TRAMLINES WEEKEND?

I loved my Tramlines weekend! I slipped on a chip butty and split my lip and also was a bit too fabulous on the Sunday evening but apart from that it was great. I loved my city being full of people enjoying themselves. The vibe was so, so nice, it was a pleasure to play on the main stage to all our family and friends too. Roll on the next one!

DID YOU GET TO SEE MANY BANDS?

I saw The Crookes play before us. I probably haven't seen them play for about 2-3 years and it was amazing to see how mega they are now. I also saw my dear Sweet Baboo play the best gig of his life at the Queens Social. All of his band play in Slow Club so it's always just dead spesh to see them play.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AND WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE NEW ALBUM?

We are currently working on the new album in Sheffield with Colin Elliot. It is going really well, we are really excited and happy with the new stuff. I am bursting to have people hear it and get back on tour! I shall not rest until we have a Grammy.

SUM UP THE NEW ALBUM IN 3 WORDS.

So, so Fabulous.

WHAT'S YOUR MUST-HAVE STAGE WEAR?

I used to freak out about what to wear on stage but recently I've started to have a bit more fun with it. I'd love to be more glamourous but on stage as in life I never feel better and more myself than being a bit of a tom boy. I own so many pretty dresses and sexy things but I will ALWAYS  go for a t-shirt and jeans at the last minute. Perhaps that needs to change?

YOU HAVE BEEN TOURING WORLDWIDE, WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO SHOP FOR VINTAGE? IF YOU GET TIME.

I always do pretty well in Birmingham and Glasgow. Maybe because I know where to look but I always plan to visit shops when we play there. I have picked up some tasty gems across America but Thrift stores in cities, much like charity shops here, are being over taken and over priced. I get most of my vintage from a table top sale at an animal sanctuary near my parents house. I'd tell you where but I would have to kill you. It's Rotherham's best kept secret!

Thanks Becky! Looking to seeing and hearing more soon! Here are some of COW's fave songs and videos from Slow Club so far!

A new hope for KOL?

Remember when KOL look like this? And sounded like this

Ahh the good ole days, they feel like a long time ago and thats cause they kinda are but good news people it looks like they have taken a positive step backwards from the stadium rock mush that they have been producing of late and moved towards the earlier muffled vocals, snappy base lines and sharp guitars of Youth and Young Manhood & Aha Shake heartbreak.
Although the title of the single 'Supersoaker' is pretty... well unexciting it does seem to be ticking far more boxes than anything from their last studio album (what was it called?) oh yea 'Come Around Sundown'.

Are we seeing a new dawn to KOL?

I suppose we will have to wait and see until the new album 'Mechanical Bull' is released on the 24th September.

Until then Enjoy the Single.

Download Festival 2013!

This weekend hosts one of the heaviest Festivals of the year right in our back garden! Pretty much all of the East Midlands as well as visitors from all over the Country come together for one thing.. to rock. Hard.

Download Festival 2013 is here and with a line up including the likes of Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Queens Of The Stone Age, Motorhead, Alice in Chains and Bullet For My Valentine we are pretty sure to expect sweat, booze, blood and mud covered outfits by the end. This is not the kind of festival you're going to dress up for so we have made a selection from our website of our Download Festival pieces that we don't mind having to wash, leave or throw away after.

Click links to shop: Left to Right:

We recommend your bag includes at least 2 band t-shirts, a few pairs of pants and some wet wipes. Have fun though and make sure you tag us if you're wearing anything from COW!

DOT TO DOT 2013

So as well as the kind people at Dot to Dot giving us some festival tickets giveaway we got a press pass for D2D Manchester!  So we gave our resident WE ARE COW photographer Richard a chance to go along and document the evening! Here is what he got up to and a few bands for you to check out if you havent already!

All words and photos by

Richard Manning

(Just click the band names for links to their sites!)

First up was up and coming SKATERS a 5 piece, skuzzy punk rock band from NYC who ironically dont skate. It was fairly early on in the day so the crowd wasn't booming but this didn't dampen the boys sprits who jumped around the stage with their snap backs and military jackets.

For fans of: Splashh / Strokes Drowners

Manchester born lads who have just been touring with Muse, playing to 40,000 people and they don't even have an album out yet. WTF. They have risen to stardom in what seems like a matter of minutes, with their catchy indie pop rock tracks and erm well... Hair.
The girls love them and the boys wanna be them, We love it.

For fans of: Little Comets / Foals / Vampire Weekend

Singer song writer Dan Croll was a great little surprise for me, I had only heard a couple of songs but he and his band really encapsulated me. Good feel vibes all round
his new single 'Compliment Your Soul' is a definite summer hit!

For fans of : Prince / Beirut

The Danish version of Grimes mixed with Lana Del Rey is what I would label her as. I went to see her at Live at Leeds earlier in May, she was super energetic and had an abundance of stage presence. Definitely something to watch for the future.

For fans of: Grimes / Lana del Ray

PINS are an all girl dark group from Manchester these ladies are awesome. Fact. Labeled by the Guardian as 'The most Brooklyn band ever to come from Manchester' what are you waiting for go listen to them

For fans of: Vivian Girls / Savages / BRMC

Deap Vally

This two piece super babe group from Cali have so much attitude and wreak of cool.
I have seen these girls a couple of times and each time they have owned the stage with Lindsey explosive screams, shouts and grimaces and Julie's amazing glitter ball outfits and auburn curls it is hard to take your eyes off them both.

For fans of: White Stripes / The Black Keys / Led Zeppelin

Best Friends are a surf pop punk band from Steel City. A bit confusing but their songs are just plain awesome and most defo gonna be on my car stereo with the windows
down when summer finally arrives!

For fans of Wavves / Bos Angeles / Gorgeous Bully

With the sun out, the line ups being confirmed and people diving into their savings for tickets we can safely say it is officially Festival season!

One of the festivals that never fails and gets better and better every year is Dot to Dot Festival! This year their line up includes some of our favourites Lucy Rose, The 1975, Bo Ningen, Swim Deep, Best Friends, Findlay, Pins, Skaters, Wild Flowers, and Deap Vally to name a few..

Wet Nuns Do It Best

Sheffield is a city that exudes talent but only a few go on to bigger and better things.. Today COW get to catch up with the newest and loudest band spreading themselves around the world who are crudely and comically known as Wet Nuns.

WET NUNS - image from Alfitude

This band have been knocking around this town and the surrounding areas or a while now but are finally getting the recognition they deserve from their sweaty live gigs to their gothy, gross music videos shot on none to hardly any budget. This gaining them a whole new bunch of followers as well as their die hard fans travelling to watch them shock and stun other cities and countries. With an EP release, their own festival under the belt and a trip to Austin, Texas to play at SXSW Festival, they are definitely paving a way into your nearest ear so be sure to keep up.

Biggest Fan.

Impressive Line Up.

We caught up with one of the band members, bearded drum basher Alexis, and asked a couple of questions on the aftermath of their highly successful weekend festival Detestival that they put on in various venues in Sheffield over the weekend. Here's what he had to say..

HOW LONG HAVE WET NUNS BEEN AROUND FOR NOW?

"Wet Nuns have been going for about 4 years now, but it's only taken off in the last couple of years. Since then we've become really busy and reached uncharted heights of silliness. It's really weird starting to get noticed and seeing people sing lyrics at us in places like Hastings or Dundee."

WHAT'S THE BEST GIG YOU'VE PLAYED SO FAR?

"We've played many great gigs, probably too many to mention.. Reading Festival was a personal highlight for me. The footage is up on youtube I think. It just seemed like the stupidest gig ever and we weren't sure what we were doing there. Our Sheffield gigs keep getting better, and the Detestival show last weekend is definitely one of the best."

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO RUN YOUR OWN FESTIVAL?

"The concept for Detestival came about one unbearably drunken night at Bestival. We basically decided that we could put on the best lineup ever, of bands that we love. We then got other people to organise it for us, and took all the credit."

ARE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW IT WENT AND THE BANDS YOU CHOSE FOR IT?

"We are so happy with how the weekend went. It surpassed all our expectations. All of the bands played better than we've ever seen them. At one point I found myself thinking 'Wow, I've loved every band that played this weekend' and then remembered that we'd chosen each act ourselves. It's the ultimate selfish act. Put on your own festival and your always going to enjoy it.."

WHAT ARE WET NUNS PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE?

"We're having a little break while Rob finishes Uni. Then after he's failed, we've got the festival season to conquer and an album to finish. We're planning some further Detestival events as well. The last one went far too well to wait another year for.."

To listen to more of or find out what we're talking about go to WET NUNS SOUNDCLOUD or follow them on TWITTER so you don't miss a thing.
